Alejandro Almenares : Casa de Trova - Cuba 50's

La Casa de Trova. The house of the troubadours. It’s a place of almost mythical status in Cuban music, the home of so many of the glorious songs that have come out of the island. Even Paul McCartney has made his pilgrimage there. For Alejandro Almenares, it’s a place he visits every single day, still carrying his guitar as he goes to play and talk with friends. And it’s the inspiration behind his album "Casa De Trova" (Tumi Records: release: February 25, 2014).

Finally at the age of 76 Alejandro Almenares gets around to recording his debut solo album, which is named for the famous club opened by his father and which Almenares runs.

Bob Dylan : Blood on the Tracks

Ranked 16 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and replete with existential thought, piercing directness, raw singing, and majestic arrangements.

Throughout, tunes come on and proceed as if they could continue forever, Dylan spinning poetic verses and conversations amidst finely tied knots of acoustic notes, chords, and fills, the deceivingly simple architecture conjuring the intertwined refractions of a bezeled jewel, various angles, colors, and textures conjoining into a gorgeously inseparable whole. Backed by Tony Brown’s flexible albeit subtle bass, Buddy Cage’s country-streaked pedal-steel guitar, and Paul Griffin’s soul-baring organ—an instrument used to shadow, tuckpoint, and illuminate here as effectively as any time in rock history—Dylan pours soulful emotion, open his veins, and bleeds.

Carole King : Tapestry

At the time of its recording, King still suffered from shyness—and who could blame her? She had been accustomed to penning lyrics for other artists and sitting behind a desk in the Brill Building. Only recently did King strike out on her own and enter the public realm. This set encapsulates this contrast in thrilling fashion. Disarmingly genuine and daringly honest, The Carnegie Hall Concert: June 18, 1971 benefits from the inclusion of King’s nervous between-song banter that exposes who she is as a person and performer. Most importantly, despite her anxiety, she turns out stirring renditions of tunes from 1970’s Writer, Tapestry, and even a few from the yet-unreleased Music

Cesaria Evora : Cafe Atlantico

The glorious Café Atlantico finds Césaria Évora venturing into more Latin American musical landscapes, as opposed to Portuguese, which dominated her previous albums. Évora draws from traditional Cuban and Brazilian music to mesmerizing effect. The album is also a tribute to her home town of Mindelo, on the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente, which was once a busy port with sailors cruising between South America, the Caribbean, and Portugal. Therefore, the music is heartbreaking and nostalgic, warm and tragic all at once.

Little Feat : Sailin Shoes

So much for the sophomore slump. Faced with the frustration that comes with making a critically acclaimed début that failed to win over mainstream audiences, Little Feat responded with Sailin’ Shoes, a sterling studio effort that synthesizes all of the band’s strengths. “Let your memory drift/And do nothing at all,” George instructs on the infectious opener “Easy to Slip.” It’s the best advice we could offer.
